Our Mission Statement...

We will be discussing the various ways technology in the form of social media and other online capacities can be used in the elementary and secondary classroom. Our aim is to explore how using these methods in the classroom can allow for a new emerging relationship between teachers and students. A relationship based on the collaborative gathering of information and community building. We will be looking at our own areas of interest and how new technologies can be incorporated into our own teaching methodologies and how learning theories apply to online learning. We hope that you find the information contained within this blog useful and helpful in creating strategic approaches to effective implementation of online learning. Our goal is to also share and discuss the opportunities and challenges we might face in using current technologies in learning and while expliring future opportunities and areas of growth.

Excuses teachers can use to NOT use Social Media tools in their class

Hi everyone,

While researching some negativities, or excuses that teachers use to not use social media within their classroom, a few common points came up.
  • Distractions: We all know that social media can be distracting.  Teachers need to supervise their students, maintain control (based on age), and also come to a common ground on how to use social media.
  • Cyberbullying: Cyberbullying is out of control on social networks, and it's something teachers need to be aware of and not ignore.  Social media is obviously not only used in a classroom, and as such, parents AND teachers need to monitor student activity for any signs of bullying.
  • Limiting face-to-face communication: There needs to be a balance between social media use and the class.
  • Continual social media change: Because there are constant changes to social media platforms and their security settings, schools and teachers must keep up to date with and act accordingly.
  • Controlling device use in class - ties into Distractions: teachers have to grow eyes in the back of their heads, and when mobile devices are used in class, the need for continual monitoring increases.  However, teachers need to have eyes at the back of their heads anyway so this excuse is pointless.
  • BYOD = Division of social class?: This is an "excuse" that I too struggle with.  Students are sometimes asked to bring their own device which in turn can highlight division between students who can afford and students who can't afford.
Please comment on how to you can overcome BYOD and social class.

Thanks everyone!
